2024.8.27 Whole Notes are Completely Gone Suddenly, only the Notebook Names, No Sections in OneNote

Questioner 2024-08-30 15:54 2514

I am using OneNote desktop from two computers, both logged into personal account and university account

My whole note book disappeared just one minute after I finished using it ( I was using personal account's notebook)). It says "there is no section here," indicating that the notebook is "empty" now.

Could it be because the educational institution (UCLA) stopped providing the license? Should I buy office 365 with my personal account?

However, this does not seem to be an issue because I can access the school account's notebook. while I cannot access the personal account's notebook.

I tried closing the notebook and opening onedrive again and I got the error code 0xE00009C8 bb0ur

I can see all the files in the notebook on Onedrive, so I thought it may be a license issue so I tried purchasing license with my personal MS account, but it still does not open Onedrive. When I click open in desktop onenote one onedrive, it moves to onenote desktop and asks me to log in. When I do so, it says

"we couldn't open the notes that you were looking for. You may not have permission to open them, or they may have been moved or deleted"

I'm the owner, so it doesn't make sense I do not have permission, nor have I ever moved/deleted the notes.

I have 6 years worth of notes, so could it be storage issue? I really need them back.

  • May I ask if you have turned on the sync option in Settings -> Sync in OneNote?  YES

  • If you have synced the file, I suggest you try to find it in the web version of OneNote, where some users have found it before: www.onenote.com  I can, but I cannot use it on online because there is too much lagging.

  • Have you tried the Find Lost Notes troubleshooting provided in this official article?   Find OneNote notes, pages or tabs - Microsoft Support https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/find-onenote-notes-pages-or-tabs-32cb2bd7-afe7-44d2-a711-398a88421287#Version=OneNote_2016. No this artricle does not cover what I'm trying to do

  • Are you unable to see the contents of the entire notebook or a particular page?  entire notebook disappeared.

  • Have you saved your notes to OneDrive? If saved, you may be able to see the notes there.  I can see the whole note book on OneDrive.m

  • Also, I follow up with you on the version information for OneNote and would confirm if this is an issue on a particular version.

This has happened a few times before.
It's all Microsoft OneDrive server issues.

OneNote 2010 Suddenly Missing All Sections, and Display"There are no sections open in this notebook or section group.  Click here to create a new http://www.onenotegem.com/a/faq/win-office-onenote/2019/1126/1328.html

In this case, it's best to do nothing and wait for Microsoft servers to be fixed.
    All notebooks resume downloads.
Of course, if the Microsoft server is broken, it will also roll back to the previous day's data.
Resulting in the loss of today's notes.

If you try to create a new deletion, the OneNote notebook is becoming corrupted.
In this way, the gains outweigh the losses.

"There aren't any sections here." message on Desktop OneNote
    Hi all,
My OneNote (Desktop app) synced, and all my notebooks have disappeared. The only thing I can see is the message:
    "There aren't any sections here.
Add a section to start taking notes."
A bit of a dilemma as I use OneNote for work.
Any fixes or have other people run into this issue as well? Any help is appreciated.
    Things I have tried already:

    • Restarting PC
    • Reinstalling OneNote and/or Microsoft 365
    • Signing out of Microsoft Account and back in
    • Closing all notebooks and reopening
    • Copying notebook in OneDrive and trying to open that

Can't open OneNote files on Desktop eventhough I can open them online

My OneNote glitched out last night and since then I can't open any of the files in my notebooks on the desktop app.

I uninstalled and reinstalled OneNote multiple times and tried all other troubleshooting methods and nothing has worked.

I can see my OneNote pages on the online version but in the desktop all of my notebooks are empty.

When I try to add to them it says misplaced sections because it cannot sync but all the notebook claim to be up to date when I try to sync them manually. I still have all of my back up files but I can't move them into my notebooks either.

I have also tried opening my notebooks pages from the online version in desktop and I just get a files don't exist in that location dialog box. My OneNote has all of my class notes on it, I need it to work so I can at least transfer my notes somewhere else.

    Hey! Sorry about this!
We have a known syncing issue affecting a subset of users on the OneNote desktop app.
We’re fully focused on fixing this ASAP, but in the meantime, the web client (onenote.com) has all of your notes available.
